Spill, a Cultural Olympiad project, travelled around playgrounds of the West Midlands and Yorkshire during Summer 2012, combining quirky, dynamic dance with high energy street gymnastics; each performance unique to each specific location.
Created to educate – bringing dance into the community, demonstrating it's an art form for everyone – and also to entertain, we designed the Spill identity to be bright, bold, accessible and outdoorsy.
With its chunky slab-serif typeface, and loud colour palette inspired by Irven Lewis's photography, the identity is unmissable; helping it to stand out and get noticed in busy parks and playgrounds. Clearly 'family-friendly' without being childish, the bold design strikes just the right note to represent the fun, lively nature of this production.
Promotional items created for Spill include a series of flyers for different stages of the tour, flags to guide people to performance locations, and an enormous (5 metre long) outdoor banner.
Attendance at both performances and workshops exceeded targets, and for many, Spill was the first performance project they had experienced within their community.
