Part of International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB) 2012, Light Fantastic was a collaboration with Flatpack Film Festival to curate and show an eclectic selection of films, all of which were – to varying extents – related to dance.
This 'festival within a festival' included films chosen, and introduced, by world-renowned choreographers and dancers such as Louise Lecavalier (who picked Man On Wire) and Shaun Parker whose choice was Moulin Rouge (he was in the film's dance scenes).
Not solely a fun fringe event, Light Fantastic's aim was to bring IDFB to the attention of a new audience, so the promotional materials needed to reflect this by differing from the busy, 'entertainment' look of other festival collateral.
We put together a clean and clear design, with imagery at the fore and white space aplenty – and a colour palette shared with IDFB producers, DanceXchange. To contrast with these colours, for the main season image we used a black and white shot from West Side Story; the film selected by IDFB Co-Director, David Massingham.
The main piece of printed promotion for Light Fantastic needed to detail the title, age guidance, director/s, year, running time and summary of each feature, along with the date, time, venue of the screening. Oh, and an image. For all nine films. That's a lot of information.
In order to create something neat, a bit different and to show-off the entire season in one place, a fold-out format was chosen. The finished, folded-down A5 brochure fitted neatly into display stands, but unfolded to reveal all the season's films on one side of A2 and a striking Light Fantastic poster on the other.
And that's a wrap!
